Alexandra (Lexi) Baker is a multimedia artist from North Carolina who will be transferring to UNCG in the fall to pursue an art education degree with a concentration in printmaking. Their work is characterized by intricate details and a strong use of symbolism.

IN THE NAME OF GOD, delves into themes of Catholicism, religious trauma, sexuality, and gender. The portrait is composed of scripture verses, paint, and small clay communion wafers. The figure is depicted nude from the chest up, painted in red—traditionally a color associated with sin and the devil in Christian iconography. By reclaiming this color, the artist challenges its historical negative connotations. The choice to portray the figure in the nude responds to the church’s emphasis on modesty and chastity, which often evokes feelings of shame. This depiction serves as both an act of defiance and a personal reclaiming of agency.

Metal, is a copper etching featuring a death’s-head hawkmoth, two skulls, and a nightshade plant. The piece explores the theme of memento mori, reflecting on the inevitability of death and the delicate balance between life and mortality. Through these symbolic elements, the artist invites the viewer to contemplate the frailty of life.
