John Bovio’s journey into the world of painting began in the Fall of 2024 when he enrolled in a class with Professor Quinn, who he credits with sparking his love for oil painting. At the time, Bovio thought he was simply filling a slot in his schedule, but the class quickly led to a series of remarkable achievements. He won an award at the student art exhibition, was the first student to sell a piece in the show, and had his artwork featured on the promotional materials for the Artist Talks. His natural talent, paired with his passion for the craft, has already set him on a promising path to success.

Bovio’s choice of subject—close-up shirt patterns—is especially intriguing. By focusing on something as familiar and relatable as clothing, he’s not only showcasing his technical skill but also weaving in a layer of narrative. His paintings offer a sense of personal connection, inviting viewers to interact with the artwork in an intimate way. It’s not just about the aesthetic of the shirt patterns, but also about the broader commentary on fashion, identity, and the daily choices we make. Bovio who wore one of the shirts featured in his painting posed the question “What should I wear today?” a playful, yet thought-provoking question, allowing the viewer to engage in the artist’s personal world.

Although the artist’s  ultimate goal is to become a medical doctor, it’s inspiring to see how Bovio makes time for his artistic passions along with his future aspirations.
